three centuries after its beginnings, the Reggia di Rivalta has been reborn as a place of beauty, culture and leisure.
the central chapter of the Ducato Estense project in reggio emilia, commissioned by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and funded primarily by the Ministry of Culture, the new park reinterprets the landscape between history and contemporaneity, re‑establishing the importance of the site’s original features and the changes that have taken place over the centuries, transforming it from a court garden into a universally accessible public park.
the redevelopment plan was conceived by a team selected through an international competition. the working group was led by studio Openfabric, with the participation of architects Alessandro Parodi and Fabrizio Polimone and the support of F&M Ingegneria as part of a temporary association of companies.
the avenue around the perimeter of the park embraces a variety of areas, while at the same time guaranteeing complete accessibility. along the main passages, tall lucus provide diffuse lighting of the walkways, while dedicated lighting is provided for the furnishings and art installations. concealed within the paving, m18 with anti-glare shielding mark the way. at the edges of the flowerbeds, erste mark the boundary between the path and the green areas. among the low bushes, stake version p1 emerge to highlight the colours and forms of the vegetation. in the large central gazebo, catenaria di luce serpentine – designed by Peter Zumthor – weaves through the space, creating a romantic, dreamlike atmosphere.
